KAVIENG AIRPORT SET FOR BIGGER PLANES

The Kavieng Airport in New Ireland Province is set to accomodate Boeing 737–800 planes, opening it up to the world.

That is, when its upgrade reaches completion in July 2022.

In a media statement, Clement Mosson said the work on the upgrading of the Kavieng Airport to International standard continues steadily since its ground breaking ceremony in July 2020.

Mosson chairs Infrastructure in the New Ireland Government.

He said, the upgrade features the 1.7 kilometre (KM) runway from 2.2km.

“So far our contractors have completed the extra 500 metres on the southern end. They are adding finishing touches to ensure runway is clear of any obstruction.

“Our contractors are adding Bituminous prime to the new pavement surface near the terminal. Giving it a sleek look.

“They are installing a security fence further towards the runway extension boundary.

Away from the runway,  contractorrs are carrying out works on the new terminal building, he said.

“The contractors are doing the installation of steel structure beams and post, steel fixing and pouring of concrete. The wallings with brick.

Other contructions include National Airports Coporation operations office, New Power House and Airport market, he said.

The Asian Development Bank is funding the project at a cost of K91 million.

IMPACT PROJECTS UNDER LIHIR MOA

Governor Sir Julius Chan said the project was under the Lihir Moa which he, as Prime Minister, signed in 1995.

“It is one of 27 impact projects promised by the State in 1995, 25 years ago, under the Lihir MOA. It will add significant value and conplement newly constructed four-lane Kavavu Avenue. The road stretches from the airport to the waterfront Our Government solely fund it to cater for the Apec visit. During the visit, Chris Hawkins promised m K4 million. Since, we have not not received it,” said Sir Julius.

The other projects include an International seaport, Boluminski Highway, Bopire Township and Namatanai Hospital.
