CLASSES TO BE RESUMED IN NEW NORMAL

Tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea (PNG) will resume classes next Monday in ‘ new normal.’

At the same time, lower school teachers will resume duty to prepare lessons for their students.

They include teachers from elementary, primary and secondary schools.

The elementary, primary and secondary school students are going back to class on May 4, 2020.

The state-of-emergency lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic on March 23 this year shut them down for more than a month.

Minister for Education Joseph Yopyyopy said teachers would resume duties seven days early next week.

‘’We have lost five weeks of effective learning and teaching. This is because of the current SoE to contain the spread of Covid-19.”

He said teachers should conduct remedial classes to make up for lost weeks.

Thus, he said students should learn all required units so they are ready for National Examinations.

He continued that his department defer the Written Expression exam for Grades 10 by a fortnight.

Initially, the department has set the exam for students to sit for on Thursday 04, June.

However, they will sit for it on June 18, 2020.

Apart from this, Minister Yopyyopy maintains that all other national exam dates remain.

He said he hoped that the SoE Controller David Manning would lift the restrictions on public transport.

This is to complement the resumption of classes.

He said his ministry was considering options to solve overcrowding in classrooms.

‘’Thus, one of the possibilities they are looking at is safe teaching mode. That is to have 2 classes a day.

“One in the morning from 8am to 1pm and the other from 2pm to 4:06,” he said.

Government tuition fee subsidy

The Education Minister Yopyyopy said his department already released first batch of the Government’s Tuition Fee Subsidy (GTFS) of K50 million into school accounts.

As a result, he He assured them that his department would send more funds later this year.

“We gave directions to schools to set up hand basins and other basic hygiene process for their students” he said.
