TEEN MOTHER WALKED FOR DAYS ONLY TO LOSE BABY

A teen mother,13, is in immense emotional trauma since having lost her day-old son on Monday at Mougulu Health Centre in Nomad LLG of Western Province.

Mougulu Health Centre’s Shally Lloyd wrote on her Facebook wall that on Sunday the girl gave birth to ‘a beautiful baby boy in our health centre.’

“She walked from her home for a couple of days, and then laboured for three days. The delivery was traumatic, with no pain medications available – a manual assisted delivery – and the child was finally born unresponsive. Trainee health workers were excited when they helped to revive the little boy and supported the mother on holding the baby and feeding,” Lloyd wrote on Facebook.

As I sat by the girl, I could feel the immense emotional trauma of a child totally lost and unsure of what to do or think. She tried not to cry. She couldn’t wail or mourn. We wrapped him up and she held him, and we said prayers goodbye. As mother could not walk, the health workers carried him to the banana garden where Aunties had dug a grave in the rain. I’m proud of those health workers – they are learning invaluable lessons you don’t find in a text book.

“And, we all come out more determined than ever to educate our people and support our children so they don’t face such trauma.
Your support for our health work and education programs will make vital changes, especially for our young people and our girls.
The future needs to look brighter,” she concluded.
