The first case detected was an foreign worker. He works at Harmony Gold Mine in Morobe’s Wau-Bulolo District. His employer flew him to Australia where he recovered reportedly.
Prime Minister James Marape said contact tracing with the first case knew her as a person of interest (POI) on March 23.
Additionally, PM Marape said health team isolated her at Nonga Hospital. At the same time, he said, they sent a medical team from Port Moresby for rapid response.
Local authorities will lock down her village to avoid the spread of the disease, he said. Lock down will make contact tracing to begin easily.
He has assured the nation that his government has a system in place. The system, he said, will make sure they stop the spread of the pandemic to some levels.
Further, Mr Marape said everything was under control. Thus, there was no need for the people to cause panic and fear among themselves.
Authorities expect the tally for positive Covid-19 case to increase as the tracing begins.
Meanwhile, authorities in Laos tested a PNG mine worker positive too. He also accounts for positive Covid-19 case in PNG.
