PNG CONFIRMS NEW COVID CASE IN EASTERN HIGHLANDS

There is now a total of eight positive Covid-19 cases in Papua New Guinea.

PNG Institute of Medical Research in Eastern Highlands province yesterday tested a 45-year-old local Covid-19 positive.

Controller for PNG Covid-19 State of Emergency, David Manning revealed this at the daily Covid-19 update in Port Moresby.

“It is my duty to inform you that we have another COVID-19 case in Eastern Highlands Province. It brings our total number of infected persons to 8,” said Manning in a prepared news release.

A fortnight ago, she reportedly developed fever, shortness of breath and body aches.

Then, she presented herself to the Asaro Health Centre on April 12.

Thus, the health center quickly. She was improving there.

As a result, frontliners at the Health Centre collected her samples five days later.

They sent it to PNGIMR tested her samples and  founded that her test was positive on April 21.

“For quality assurance and best practice we are doing a second test for this patient. We are doing the same for the positive cases that we have tested already,” he said.

Local authorities locked down the health centre for disinfection.

Its staff are on home-quarantine and are under surveillance.

“The Eastern Highlands Provincial Health Authority will be taking care of the Asaro health centre staff during their lockdown. The management is also working with the police to manage any potential social issues arising from this case,” he said.

In the meantime, he said, advocacy and contact tracing activities began today.

He reiterated that all domestic air travel are to resume.

“But, only to provinces where there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19.”

He urged fellow citizens and business houses to learn to practise new normal ways of life to contain the virus spread.
