He said police delayed pressing murder charge on Gau immediately after arresting him.
That is because doctors from Port Moresby General Hospital were still processing his medical and psychiatric clearance.
They provided the report over over the weekend which enabled them to charge him, he said.
“During the time of the incident, we don’t know the mental state of the person. He was a danger to the community. Thus, we kept him inside the cell for proper medical process before charging him,” said Mr Ikumu on a Post Courier news report.
He said the investigation would continue whilst the suspect would be held in custody.
According to police report, Gau had an argument with his wife, the sons’ mother, on April 27, 2021.
Additionally, the report stated that when the mother stepped out after the dispute, he committed filicide.
Further, it reported the suspect attempted to commit suicide after the alleged killing but police stopped him. Related news: https://www.looppng.com/national-news/koki-murder-99738
